There are over 10,000 named tomato varieties worldwide. Choosing which to grow can be paralyzing. The key is matching varieties to your specific needs: your climate, growing conditions, eating preferences, and preservation goals.
Determinate vs. Indeterminate
- Determinate: Bush types that grow to a set height, fruit heavily over 2-3 weeks, then decline. Perfect for canning (concentrated harvest) and containers. Examples: Roma, Celebrity, Bush Early Girl.
- Indeterminate: Vining types that grow until frost kills them, producing continuously all season. Better for fresh eating. Need sturdy support. Examples: Brandywine, Cherokee Purple, Sungold.
By Purpose
- Fresh eating/slicing: Brandywine, Cherokee Purple, Black Krim, Mortgage Lifter — big, flavorful, and juicy
- Cherry/snacking: Sungold (the gold standard), Sweet Million, Black Cherry, Matt's Wild Cherry
- Sauce/canning: San Marzano, Roma, Amish Paste — meaty, low-moisture, few seeds
- All-purpose: Celebrity, Early Girl, Stupice — reliable producers good for everything
Choosing for Your Climate
Short-season gardeners (under 100 frost-free days) should focus on early-maturing varieties: Stupice (55 days), Glacier (55 days), Sub Arctic Plenty (50 days). Hot-climate gardeners need heat-tolerant varieties that set fruit above 90 F: Heat Wave, Solar Fire, Phoenix.
Disease Resistance
Look for resistance codes on seed packets: V (verticillium), F (fusarium), N (nematodes), T (tobacco mosaic virus). Heirloom varieties rarely have disease resistance, so they need extra care — good air circulation, clean tools, and copper spray at the first sign of blight.
The Trial Approach
Grow 3-5 tried-and-true varieties plus 2-3 new ones each year. Record performance rigorously. Over several seasons, you will discover which varieties thrive in your specific microclimate.
